A Class 8 truck or tractor has a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of 33,001 + pounds. These are also referred to as heavy-duty or semi-trucks.
These vehicles come in one of four options:
- straight truck day cab
- straight truck sleeper cab
- tractor day cab
- tractor sleeper cab
A straight truck day cab is a Class 8 vehicle with the trailer/body attached to the chassis, and there is no sleeping compartment for the driver(s). These trucks are utilized in more local or regional deliveries or become vocational vehicles like cement or refuse trucks.
A straight truck sleeper cab is a Class 8 vehicle where the trailer/body is attached to the chassis, and there is a sleeping compartment for the driver(s). These trucks are utilized in more specialized, long-haul deliveries.
A Class 8 tractor day cab is a vehicle where the trailer is not attached to the chassis, and there is no sleeping compartment for the driver(s). These trucks are utilized in on-highway short-medium haul, regional deliveries, port, or drayage applications.
A Class 8 tractor sleeper cab is a vehicle where the trailer is not attached to the chassis, and there is a sleeping compartment for the driver(s). These trucks are utilized in the bulk of on-highway freight hauling.
